Sylvester Stallone's Words To His Late Son In 'Rocky V' Movie Had Some Important Life Lessons
If you perform an emotional parenting role in which your partner is also your real child, chances are that there will be some deep and touching moments.
This was exactly what happened when actor Sylvester Stallone and his son Sage Stallone starred in Rocky V. And even though the movie was released in 1990, Sylvester's words to his boy still holds as much meaning to this day.
The movie that united father and son
In a particularly poignant scene in Rocky V, the character, Rocky Balboa, talked to his son, Rocky Jr., about the importance of getting back up despite all problems. The older man told his on-screen son to never let other people determine his fate, while blaming others for any struggles is cowardly.
While this was a heartwarming movie moment in itself, knowing Stallone was giving his son an important life speech made it even more significant - both in the movie and off-screen.
Interestingly enough, acting alongside his father in that movie also had a deeper meaning for Sage himself. The younger Stallone told PEOPLE in 1996 that there were father-son moments in the movie that were cathartic.
Sage, who did not have the best relationship with his dad for a very long time, said:
When I was screaming, ‘You never spent time with me! You never spent time with my mother!’ – that was true. I was looking into my father’s face and really saying that.
He also added that the movie helped him get a lot of things out, and afterwards, things changed for the better between himself and his dad.
We'd do anything for each other.
The late Sage Stallone
Sage Stallone was born on May 4, 1976. He was the first of Sylvester Stallone's four children and he played the famous actor's on-screen son in the fifth sequel of Rocky Balboa. He was 14 years old at the time.
Afterwards, he took part in a number of film projects, but his movie career was unfortunately cut off. On July 13, 2012, at the age of 36, Sylvester Stallone released a statement announcing the passing of his son.
He was found dead earlier that day at his home in Los Angeles. He reportedly died as a result of a heart attack, which was due to a heart disease he had.
Stallone described his eldest son's death as an "agonizing loss."
I am humbly begging for all to have my son’s memory and soul left in peace.
Rocky V was not just a movie that a real-life father and son happened to act in together, it was very instrumental in uniting a family after years of hurt and pain. The scenes between Stallone and his son held a strong and very significant meaning for their relationship.
