On screen, he's the man of action and few words, a natural leader and dedicated person. Known as Leroy Jethro Gibbs to millions, Mark Harmon is just the same in real life. He was once called the Sexiest Man Alive by People Magazine, but he never really accepted such title or used it to his benefit - Mark's been a loyal husband to Pam Dawber for 30 years now.
But, in spite of all his professional achievements, few people know that there is also an off-screen great deed of the actor: Mark saved a teenager's lifeback in 1996.
At the right time and in the right place
It was around 7:15 PM on January 3rd, 1996, when 16-year-old Colin Specht was in a car with his friend. They were passing the Harmons' house in Los Angeles, CA, when a horrible accident happened. While driving, Colin's friend missed a turn and their car crashed into a tree.
In no time, the vehicle burst into flames, and while one of the kids managed to get out, Colin was trapped inside. He was ready to die when suddenly, the window crashed, and somebody pulled him out.
It was Mark Harmon who saved the teen. The father of two young kids risked his life and the happiness of his family to do this.
"Mr. Harmon broke out the car windows and pulled the boys to safety," said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman from the Fire Department. He also added:
The youths owe their lives to the action of Mr. Harmon.
A few minutes after the actor had come to the boy's rescue, the car exploded! The two teens were soon taken to St. John's Hospital and Health Center. Fortunately, they both survived that night, though Colin suffered serious injuries due to the accident.
Colin Specht about Mark Harmon
That day, apart from 12 broken bones, Colin got 30% of his skin burned. Now 37, he has scars almost all over his body, covered with tattoes as camouflage - a constant reminder of that accident and how lucky he was to get out alive.
In an interview with CBS, Colin said about Mark:
People always say like, 'Oh, is he an angel?' ... Mark Harmon is not an angel, he's more, because an angel has no sense of mortality.
As to how that accident influenced him and what Harmon's deed means to him, the man confessed:
There’s no way I can repay him, except for pay it forward, and I try to do that in my life.
If not for Mark Harmon's quick reaction to the accident, Colin could not have had all of that now. More about this remarkable actor, his heroic deed, and what Colin Specht recalls of that day in the video below:
