An Important Decision

Christina Applegate, the Anchorman cast member was in an exclusive interview with, when she revealed that she just recently had a salpingectomy, which is the removal of her ovaries and fallopian tubes.

About 9 years prior, she had undergone a mastectomy involving both breasts after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.


Family History

Applegate has the BRCA1 gene, making her genetically predisposed to an increased chance of developing cancer. She disclosed in an interview with TODAY that her cousin had died from ovarian cancer in 2008, and to prevent another cancer diagnosis she made the decision to have her own ovaries and fallopian tubes removed. “It’s a relief”, she joked.


The Hollywood actress is married to Dutch musician Martyn LeNoble and they have a young daughter, Sadie. Aware that her daughter has an increased chance of having the BRCA1 gene, Christina devotes her time to Sadie, as she relayed,

“I look at her and feed her the cleanest foods. I try to keep her stress levels down. I'm doing everything I can on my end knowing that in 20 years, she'll have to start getting tested".


Maintaining a lifestyle free of stress and a diet modification, Applegate still goes to the oncologist for regular checkups.

Helping Other Women

In addition, Christina founded Right Action for Women - a charity organization which provides financial support for women who are at a high risk for breast cancer. They also help them to undergo MRI's and other tests including BRCA1 gene testing which is quite an expensive diagnostic procedure.


She also advises women to

“Try to stay away from the foods that are filled with chemicals. Be a little more diligent and carve out as much of the bad stuff that you can. The other big killer is stress”.

Today Applegate is an inspiration to many around the world and teaches us all to lend a helping hand in our own way no matter how little it may be. You never can tell how far what you call little can go.
