There is no better way to usher in a new year than with the promise of forever love. And after 42 years of friendship and commitment, Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner officially tied the knot during a private ceremony in Los Angeles.

A true test of love

The duo first met in the 1970s. They have been together for over 40 years. Although they never officially came out, their relationship wasn’t hidden from the public. It's no secret that the couple adores each other, but Tomlin has often said that the secret to their relationship is mutual admiration and respect for one another.

78-year-old Wagner and 74-year-old Tomlin have also shared professional relationship, including The Incredible Shrinking Woman and Tony-winning one-woman show, The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe.

To be or not to be

The Grace and Frankie star never thought about marriage, mostly because she didn't expect to see the day when same-sex marriages become legal.

In an interview with James Corden, Lily Tomlin shares the not so romantic story of how they decided to go through with it.

Love is all that matters

When asked for the secret to commitment in an interview with The Washington Post, she replied:

Commitment. Just willingness to go the distance. Caring about somebody, respecting somebody. Just wanting to build on that.

Undeterred by the odds against them, the duo has spent a lifetime building a fulfilling relationship based on trust and friendship. And we couldn't be happier for them.
