Whether we realize it or not, when we go shopping at any store, products are divided up based on gender. There are products for men and products for women, each in their section, with their price.

It has become normal to see gendered products that many of us, including me, do not think twice when we need to buy something.

For some people this is great, in-depth discussions about the injustices and societal imbalances caused by outdated gender norms are long overdue. For others, it is an unnecessary drama that gets in the way of more pressing issues.

Of course, this is overly simplistic. But no matter where you stand on the myriad opinions and debates swirling around on the subject of gender, you can laugh at this list of gendered products.

For adults, playing with toys is a break from life. For children, especially in the earliest stages of childhood development, playing is life, and toys are the tools of early learning. That includes lessons about gender.

American society has made significant strides towards gender equality over the past century, but children’s toys seem to be moving in the opposite direction, reinforcing traditional roles rather than expanding them.

The implications are serious: for instance, the way girls play may affect how their brains develop. Ultimately, it may be up to parents to bridge the gender divide.

The ridiculous gender products that have graced many shelves.

The problem is that many of these gendered products have the same function and could be equally used by any gender, but our society has decided what is suitable for each sex.

Products that get gendered can be uncomfortable to see, but it is not going to stop anytime soon; society will always put out unnecessarily gender items because of the market demand. Because we're growing up in a culture designed around gender, it is hard to realize we have been buying into the “for her” versus “for him” scheme our entire lives.

To change this, it starts with being more aware. Instead of buying a product because it is the “correct” gender for you, buy something because you want it or it is a good price, it does not matter if it matches what society presumes to be “normal” for your gender.
