When Sun Is Your Biggest Enemy: For 7 Years, Boy Struggles With What People Expect All Winter

Most people are waiting for the summer to come, as it means there will be more sunny and warm days. Summer and sun are often associated with pleasure, good mood, and positive energy. And it is hard to believe that for some people sun is probably the biggest enemy.

Have you ever heard about the disease called xeroderma pigmentosum? It is a condition characterized by extreme sun sensitivity, and it leads to a very high risk of skin cancer. It is also characterized with hearing loss, eye problems, neuromuscular degeneration, and many other problems.

A 7-year-old boy from California, Oliver, is one of those people who suffers from this rare disease. His mom, Noelle Kei, often posts pictures from their life on her Twitter account. Despite all hardships they have gone through, woman says she is proud to be Oliver’s mother.

Noelle says:

We wait until sundown and we will be there all late afternoon, where it is more comfortable for him and not as hot. Then, everyone leaves the beach and we have the beach to ourselves. We’ll have a picnic under the starts and let the kids play in the sand.

Unfortunately, the sun is not the only problem. Oliver’s chances to get a skin cancer are increased by 10,000 times, eye cancer – by 2,000 times.

Have you ever thought about the sun's effect on skin? It is widely known that the sun helps produce vitamin D, which is vital for bone formation. But, on the other hand, exposure to ultraviolet rays can one day cause skin cancer.
