Date December 22, 2017

Jeff Bridges has been making movies since 1951. At the tender age of two, he had a debut in The Company She Keeps. He went on to star in over 70 movies in his career. You may remember him as Champagne "Champ" in Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

His performances have earned him several Academy Award nods. He even Won the Academy Award for Best Actor, after playing Otis "Bad" Blake in Crazy Heart, 2009. Jeff started out as a musician and has three records under his belt most memorable is the self-titled album which reached Number 2 on the US Folk Chart.

Love at first sight

This tear makes it 40 years this sterling actor has been married to Susan Geston. They met in 1975 while he was in Montana. At the time, Jeff was in his 20s and already had 10 movies to his name. Susan was a young student, waiting tables to pay for college. In this video, Jeff recounts how he was immediately smitten by her.

His first attempt at wooing Susan was unexpectedly contracted but that marked the beginning of a relationship that would last for years to come.

He almost lost Susan.

Despite him being madly in love with Susan, Jeff was unwilling to commit himself to marriage. At the time, he felt he was not prepared for the responsibility that came with a long-term relationship. His doubts were somewhat short lived.

Susan served Jeff an ultimatum and he knew he had to act fast or lose the woman he loved forever. Speaking to OWN, he recalls:

I said, 'Oh God, I can't let this woman go. I had this vision of an old guy thinking there was this girl from Montana, man, why didn't I marry her.

He speedily proposed to Susan in 1977 and only a few months later, they were married.

Marriage tips

Earlier this year, the TV star shared insights about his marriage. He did this during an interview promoting his new movie The Only Living Boy in New York.

Talking helps, Jeff says. Jeff and Susan are reported to have had their troubles at a stage in their relationship that was fraught with massive fights. They learned to listen, giving the other person ample time to share their thought, without interruptions.

Jeff is also a stickler for fidelity, and his wife Susan confirms this. He also is proud to mention that a supporting spouse can do a lot for personal and mutual development in a relationship.

He said:

If you change partners every time it gets tough or you get a little dissatisfied, then you don't get the richness that's available in a long-term relationship. My wife supports me and it makes me love her more.

Long after the wedding, Jeff reminisces his trepidation at the start of the relationship and his concerns about commitment. He had this to say in summary.

He said:

What you don't know until you get married is that you think all the other doors close, which is true, but this doorway you open [with marriage] is a hallway lined with all these other brilliant doors—kids, deeper intimacy, adventures, and everything else.

40 years after, Jeff is without regrets. He is still with the woman he fell in love with so many years ago. They were blessed with three beautiful daughters and the family continues to grow as they welcome grandchildren.
