As White As Snow: Mom Opens Up About Her Shocked Reaction After Giving Birth To Albino Baby

Date April 23, 2018

You probably know what albinism is, because it’s a pretty well-known condition. This rare group of genetic disorders affects the hair, skin, and eyes, causing them to have either no or little color. It also may have a psychological effect because albinos may experience taunts and bullying.

Most often, it occurs to those who have parents with albinism or the gene for the condition. But sometimes, the birth of such children is a total surprise, and Taylor Dunnavant from Missouri knows it better than anyone.

This is her story

From the very beginning of her second pregnancy, she could sense something was different. The 25-year-old mom expected she would crave weird food and gain weight. But instead, she couldn’t eat anything and lost some pounds.

Taylor also ran into some brief complications, like pains in unexpected places and nosebleeds. But on the day of birth, she finally felt well-rested and perfectly fine. However, as soon as she gave birth to a daughter, everyone in the delivery room was absolutely shocked:

All I could do was yell, ‘Oh!’ Our baby had hair alright, a head full of hair – white as snow.

This was the moment all the different thoughts started swarming in. Taylor and her husband, Chris were terrified and greatly concerned about their daughter’s health. Soon, they made an appointment with a genetic specialist who confirmed the diagnosis – albinism.

Neither Taylor nor Chris had a family history of the condition, so they were completely confused. Still, it was a relief for them to know that, despite the diagnosis, their daughter was healthy.

Little Noralynn will most likely need corrective lenses and sunscreen. But other than that, she’s OK.

Besides, they didn’t even have to explain to their oldest child, daughter Brooklyn, why her sister was different. It turns out that the 5-year-old thinks Noralynn is magical:

She told me that her sister was a snow fairy, and then she informed me that she was related to Elsa.

Giving birth to an albino is not as rare as you might think. Rosamere Fernanda de Andrade from Recife made headlines when she welcomed her third baby with albinism. Now, three of her children have white skin and blonde hair, while other three are black like their parents.

Such children teach us to accept that everyone is unique and different in a special way.
