The movie will be set around the relationship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod, who was writing a profile of him for Esquire magazine in 1998.

“You Are My Friend” is described as a heartwarming film in which a cynical journalist gets his perspective on life transformed by the beloved icon.

Marielle Heller, who will be directing the screenplay, said in the release:

The script knocked me out with its message of kindness and its exploration of the human spirit. As a mother, I am so inspired by the teachings of Fred Rogers and as a human, I am in awe of his life’s work.

Hannah Minghella, the president of TriStar Pictures, also commented:

This is the perfect alchemy of talent coming together at the perfect time to remind us all of the transformative power of kindness and respect to heal and to unite.

Tom Hanks seems like a perfect match for this role. He is no stranger to playing real people, like Chesley Sullenberger, a pilot who landed a plane in the Hudson River, or James B. Donovan, an American lawyer who was sent to Germany to defend a Soviet spy during the Cold War.
