Date March 29, 2018

On May 3, 2007, 4-year-old Madeleine Beth McCann was apparently taken from her bed while she slept. At the time she was on vacation with her parents, Gerry McCann Kate McCann (née Healy). The family which also included Madeleine’s twin siblings was lodged in Praia da Luz, a resort in the Algarve region of Portugal.

In the weeks that followed her disappearance, it was suggested that Madeleine may have died in an accident in the apartment. The Police in Portugal also suggested the couple may have hidden the body as well.

By 2013, Scotland yard officially opened an investigation into the case. Over the years, the scale of the investigation has reduced. But the McCann’s have suffered untold abuse by the press and constant harassment.

The search is not over.

April 2017 made it ten years since Madeleine disappeared and her parents had still not given up on finding her. Madeleine would have been 9 years old already.

It is not uncommon for abductors to hold children for several years. The fact hardly provides succor for the parents who have been holding their breath for so long. Still, it offers a glimmer of hope.

With all the attention that the case had generated, the weary parents reiterated that all they wanted was to find their little girl and reunite her with her siblings. The McCann’s have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds in their search for Madeleine.

Marking the anniversary.

After years of searching, they shared this powerful message to mark the moment:

The two themes that seem most appropriate to me as we reach this ten year mark are perseverance and gratitude: We will go on, try our hardest, never give up and make the best of the life we have.

May 2018 will make it 11 years since Madeleine was taken. There still may be a chance that she is somewhere alive and well.

At the end of 2017, the government released an additional £154,000 for use in the investigation. The amount is expected to run from October 2017 to March 2018. There have been reviews of spending on the investigation every since months since it began.
