Winning the lottery is usually a blessing for many. But sometimes, it can be a curse. This was the case of 20-year-old Georgia Lottery winner Craigory Burch, Jr.
In 2015, Burch won the Fantasy 5 jackpot and went home with $434,272. He was working as a forklift operator at the time. Being a generous soul, Burch decided to buy gifts for the needy at Christmas.

In January, Burch was at home on Stubbs Avenue with his 2-year-old child and girlfriend Jasmine Hendricks when 3 masked assailants kicked down his door and demanded money.
According to Hendricks, Burch pleaded with the assailants who were armed not to shoot him in front of his family. However, they shot him in both legs and left, only for one assailant to return and shoot Burch again. Sadly, Burch died after.

Authorities say the act was a targeted shooting. Seven suspects were arrested in connection with the shooting.
Anonymity laws may have protected him.
Not all states require winners to be made public. Marty King, a partner with law firm Gorman & Williams in Maryland, shared this information while speaking on TODAY.

According to the lawyer, lottery players can easily cross state lines and buy tickets. If they win, state laws on revealing winners apply even if the state a winner is resident in requires public announcements of wins.
This way, lottery winners are protected as their identities remain covered. Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and South Carolina are the states which currently do not require public announcements. So no photos with oversize checks making the news.

It may be too late for Burch, but future lottery players may be able to avoid unpleasant situations by using this tip.
