When 24-year-old Haley Smith from Amarillo, Texas got proposed to by her boyfriend, Matt, it was the happiest day of her life. She was set to marry the man she loved and spend the rest of her life with him. But her smile dimmed greatly when she saw photos of the engagement.

Haley was overweight. The sheer sight of herself getting proposed to was heartbreaking, as she said she could barely recognize herself.

I cried because this was one of the happiest moments of my life, but I was just so ashamed.

Haley found it hard understanding what Matt saw in her to love, as she felt that her weight make her very unattractive.

Consequently, Haley decided that she would make a change to her lifestyle and lose weight. However, it sounded a lot easier than it turned out. For a while, Haley struggled with diets and workouts.

In her bid to lose weight fast, Haley tried taking the short route with little success. While she was successfully cutting out some healthy eating habits, she noticed she would pick up some new ones.

At a time, she committed herself to not eat anything after 8 p.m. In addition, she started logging information about her meals and also taking note of how much water she drinks.

Tackling those small, feasible changes made snowballing into running three times a week and adding strength training so much more doable.

Motivation was a problem but she found a workaround

It was a long and painful process, and sometimes, Haley wanted to quit. For her, finding the motivation to continue her new routine posed a problem.

Still, she found creative ways to make the process more bearable. For starters, she opened an Instagram account where she shared pictures of her weight-loss journey.

She also bought motivational quotes and hung them on her walls to keep her spirits up.

For many weight-watchers, standing on a scale can be very terrifying. To curb the fear, Haley decorated her scale, making it a bit less frightening.

She also remained consistent in marking off her workout tasks and logging her diet. And in just over a year, Haley was able to lose about 110 lbs. By the time she was set for her wedding, she looked like a whole new person. Finally, all the months of hard work paid off.

It is so surreal. I thought for sure I would get married in a long-sleeve ball gown dress to hide my whole body, but I ended up picking a strapless mermaid dress.

I felt so beautiful in it! Instead of being self-conscious and hiding or sweating the whole time, I was able to feel confident, relax, enjoy my family and friends.

Losing weight without the hassle
