Pasta is perhaps one of the most popular carbohydrates on American plates and for good reason. It is easy to prepare and offers a variety of ways to be cooked.

Carbs, when broken down, form glucose. And glucose is a major contributor to weight gain. As a matter of fact, most weight loss diet plans recommend avoiding carbs as much as possible.

It doesn’t really matter how the pasta is served. Whether Italian style or just good old spaghetti and meatballs, carbs are a no-no. Instead, non-starchy vegetables like greens, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, and plantains are recommended. They are high in fiber and contain fewer carbs.
A surprising study shows pasta is actually good for weight loss
Canadian researchers at St. Michael's Hospital recently released findings from a study that prove eating pasta can aid weight loss. The study involved 2,488 people who ate pasta three times a week.

In addition, these people were asked to avoid other foods rich in carbohydrates. This study was based on the concept of glycemic index. It ranks foods based on the rate at which the body breaks down carbs to form glucose.
Pasta actually causes smaller increases in blood sugar levels when compared to other carbs, like rice and white bread. So it was the ideal carb type to use for this test.

Each participant ate about 3.3 servings of pasta every week for 12 weeks. That is about two cups of cooked pasta.
After the trial, researchers noticed a small amount of weight loss. Participants actually lost about 0.5kg (1.1 lb), as researcher Dr. John Sievenpiper confirms. However, he said more tests need to be carried out.

So, good news for pasta lovers, especially those trying to lose weight. You probably don’t need to sign off pasta after all.

Top of the list of foods that work wonders for weight loss is fruits and vegetables. Whether they are store bought or grown in a garden, they provide loads of nutrition the body needs.

Leafy greens are loaded with fiber and contain essential vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants. Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage and broccoli also contain protein in reasonable amounts. Citrus fruits also contain naturally occurring sugar.
