Date March 28, 2018

Burglaries can be pretty scary, especially when they happen with the homeowners still on the premises. They are even scarier when children are involved. In August 2017, Jonathan Lai’s home was hit by a young burglar in his absence.

At the time, his 3-year-old son was at home with nanny Jenna Lee Baker. After returning to the house from running errands, the nanny felt something was out of place. While trying to investigate, she heard the burglar running down the stairs.

Babysitter to the rescue

Early this month, 14-year-old Savannah Jones hid herself and her 4-year-old niece in a bathroom while a burglar ransacked their home in Montclair, California. The brave teen was smart enough to call her mom who was away at the time.

Although the girls were afraid, Savanna stayed brave for her little niece and was able to keep her calm. Thankfully, the burglar took off without finding Jones or Zoyee.

What to do if your house is invaded

Home invasions can be frightening, but these tips should keep you safe:

  1. Make sure there is a real burglar in the house, and not a family member or a pet.
  2. Don’t attack! It is safe to find a close hiding spot.
  3. Call the police immediately.
  4. If you are hidden, be as quiet as possible and remain calm.
  5. Alert your family members, roommates, or neighbors.
  6. If you see an opening, exit the house.
  7. Keep a mental note of everything that happens.
