The twins were born in 2005 in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Their parents were originally from Guinea-Bissau in West Africa. Both girls have albinism, a medical condition that causes skin and hair to lack pigmentation.

It is this unique physical feature that struck Terranova and served as his inspiration for the photo shoot. Speaking about the art project, he said:

My art represents the beauty in diversity and both the literal and symbolic extensions of empowerment.

Breakout stars

Since the release of Terranova’s project, the twins have gotten very popular and attracted even more attention from big brands. Nike, Insanis, and Bazaar Kids are but a few of the major players that the twins have modeled for.

As for the girls, they are pretty comfortable with their unique features and have no problem with the attention they get.

Twin sister Mara also added, “growing up like this was amazing, we love being different and are happy with our unique beauty.”

The twins’ elder sister, 15-year-old Shiela was also photographed by Terranova for his showcase. Although she does not have albinism, she is also stunning with her rich brown skin and striking features.
