It’s not known how long he will stay in the hospital, but his treatment hasn’t included additional surgical procedures so far.
The Prince's hospitalization follows his comments surrounded by controversy, which he made to a Danish newspaper:
My wife has decided that she would like to be Queen, and I'm very pleased with that; but as a person, she must know that if a man and a woman are married, then they are equal. My wife hasn't shown me the respect an ordinary wife should show her spouse. I didn't marry the Queen to get buried at Roskilde. It's my wife and not me that can do anything about this matter. If she wants me buried with her, she has to make me King Consort.
Later it was confirmed by the royal palace that Henrik made an official request not to be buried in the Cathedral next to the queen.
After a diagnostic process, the doctors revealed Prince’s diagnose that could have an effect on his behavior and judgment. The Danish royal house made an official announcement:
Following a longer diagnostic process and lately a series of examinations during late summer, a specialist team ... has now concluded that his Royal Highness Prince Henrik suffers from dementia. The extent of the cognitive failure is ... greater than expected considering the age of The Prince.
Henrik married her Majesty, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, in 1967. He renounced his title of Prince Consort in 2016, acknowledging his disappointment of not being named King Consort. Since then, he spent most of his time in France at his private vineyard.
It was not an easy year for the Danish Royal Family. Queen Margrethe addressed that in her New Year’s Eve speech.
In some ways, this has not been an easy year for my family and me. Therefore, we have been deeply touched by the sympathy and understanding extended to Prince Henrik by so very many people. We are very grateful for that. It makes everyday life easier for all of us. Life goes up and down. The most important thing is that we have people who are close to us.
Prince Henrik has two sons with his wife Margrethe - Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim, and eight grandchildren.
