2009’s Sleep in America poll reported that 20% of Americans get less than six hours of sleep each night. For some people, overworking causes their extreme sleepiness. In other people, it could be a sign of a medical condition, like sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, or narcolepsy.

1. Your body needs oxygen to stay active. To give your brain more oxygen, lie on any flat surface. Then, put one hand on your stomach and the other on your chest. Breathe slowly through your mouth. Repeat 5-10 times.

2. If you can afford to take a shower, then, by all means, do. A hot or cold bath can jolt the body back to its naturally active state. Alternatively, wash your face and pat it dry.


3. A little coffee can give that much energy boost but never drink too much. There’s always the hangover to deal with later.

4. Nothing beats a good old stretch to get the blood flowing again. Whether it is at home before work or during a lunch break, it works wonders for chasing away drowsiness.

5. Cold ice cream can help wake the brain up, not because of the sugar but the temperature. But like coffee, don’t do too much and avoid making it a habit.
