Charlie Chaplin was one of the most prominent actors of the early 20th century.
Chaplin became a worldwide icon, thanks to his screen persona called "the Tramp" with his widely-recognizable baggy pants, bamboo cane, bowler hat, stylish mustache, and over-sized shoes.

The English actor is considered to be a very important figure in the history of the film industry. His career continued for more than 75 years, but his personal life is no less interesting than his on-screen one.

Charlie could be politically daring at times and often had conflicts with American political and social mores, which led him to a voluntary exile to Switzerland, where he passed away in 1977.

Most Hollywood scholars know a lot about his life, but there are interesting facts that general public is not aware of.
Charlie was very fond of young wives. He was married 4 times, and his first wife, Mildred Harris, was only 16 when Charlie took her to the altar at 29. His second wife was the 16-year-old Lita Grey whom he married at 35. His third, and some say, fictional marriage was to Paulette Goddard when Charlie was 47 and she was 28. The actor’s last wife was Oona O'Neill whom he married shortly after she turned 18. Chaplin was 54 at that time.
So, how many children came out of these 4 marriages, you ask? Eleven!
In 1918, Charlie met a child actress Mildred Harris. They married quite quickly - Charlie believed that Mildred was pregnant, but it turned out she wasn’t. Nonetheless, in 1919, she gave birth to a son, Norman, who sadly died three days later. The couple divorced next year.
In 1924, English comedy star met another child actress, Lita Grey. After she became pregnant, they married and had two sons, Charles and Sydney. A divorce was filed three years later, with Lita calling Chaplin cruel.
In 1936, Charlie married an actress and his co-star Paulette Goddard. The couple had no children, but in 1942, Chaplin got divorced again.
He married his last wife, Oona O'Neill, when he was 54. The couple had 8 children.
Charlie wrote in his autobiography:
For the last 20 years, I have known what happiness means. I have the good fortune to be married to a wonderful wife. I wish I could write more about this, but it involves love, and perfect love is the most beautiful of all frustrations because it is more than one can express.
Among the many Chaplin children and grandchildren, there are a lot of actors and actresses. His daughter from his last wife, Geraldine Chaplin, portrayed his mother Hannah in the movie about Chaplin's life, in 1992.
