Ed Sheeran May Have Breached A Royal Protocol When He Received His MBE From Prince Charles

Date December 10, 2017

Singer Ed Sheeran tried to be on his very best behaviour when he met Prince Charles and received his MBE. But as we know, even with the best intentions, we all make a few mistakes. But it was alright though, if the Prince did not mind, who are we to argue?

The superstar singer

Ed Sheeran is a famous singer-songwriter and producer. A lot of his singles have gone on to be massive hits. Since his first album, '+' was released in September 2011, Sheeran has only been blossoming in the music industry.

With chart-topping singles like 'Thinking Out Loud,' 'Shape Of You' and 'Photograph' he has been able to garner himself a large army of fans over time.

Getting his MBE

The singer recently visited Buckingham Palace where he was invited to receive his MBE, his official declaration as a Member of the Order of the British Empire. Sheeran was formally dressed and looked absolutely dashing as he received this special recognition from Prince Charles.

The MBE is usually given to celebrate an outstanding achievement or service to the community that has had an impact on others.

Breaching a royal protocol

As people celebrated the singer and the special honour that was bestowed upon him, they could not help but notice that he breached a significant royal protocol during his encounter with Prince Charles.

The 'Shape Of You' singer was pictured touching the Prince's arm as the pair shook hands during the ceremony. This is not allowed. During an official greeting between a member of the royal family and a guest, the royal etiquette states that touching should not go beyond a formal handshake. Since this was a formal event, reaching in for an informal pat on the arm was not acceptable.

But the good news is, Prince Charles did not seem to mind. In fact, the both of them went on to have a pretty friendly conversation. Speaking to reporters after the event, Sheeran said;

He was asking me if I was still selling lots of records, and I told him I've got a concert in New York tomorrow [Friday]. He was quite surprised I was flying after this.

He also replied with a "Yeah, why not?!" when he was asked if he would like to perform at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's upcoming nuptials.

Ed Sheeran was certainly deserving of the honour and despite his little faux-pas, the ceremony was concluded without a hit. So, way to go, Sheeran.
