Trumps Reveal First Christmas Card

America’s First Family's unveiled their 2017 Christmas card on Monday, the 27th of November. The card simply reads:

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The cover of the card is quite simple and features the presidential seal in gold. The use of the phrase " Merry Christmas" in the card is very different from the Obama family's holiday greetings. The Obama's cards all used the  phrase "Happy Holidays" instead.  This fulfills President Trump's vow to Americans on repeated occasions to say Merry Christmas again in the White House.

Obamas' Cards Were Different, Of Course

Former president Barack Obama’s official Christmas cards were very different from Trump’s. All of  the eight cards issued during his tenure featured the phrase "Happy Holidays" and did not use the word "Christmas." The covers of some of the cards featured the Obama family, while the others featured the family dogs Bo and Sunny.  The Obama’s 2016 Christmas card, for example, had the following greeting:

Happy holidays. As our family reflects on our many happy years spent in the White House, we are grateful for the friends we’ve made, the joy we’ve shared, and the gifts of kindness we’ve received. We wish you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season and a wonderful new year.

The cover of the card featured a portrait of the Obama family at a state dinner.

How The President Prepares For Christmas

The White House Christmas decorations this year provide an insight into how the holiday has been celebrated by past presidents. The theme “Time-Honored Traditions” was designed by First Lady Melania Trump. It pays respect to 200 years of holiday traditions at the White House.

This year, the Christmas decorations feature the following:

  • Gold Star Family Tree, which is a tribute to service members and their families;
  • family Christmas Dinner Set, with the table displaying the china from President Ronald Reagan;
  • President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1866 edition of "A Christmas Carol."

The Blue Room also features a Christmas tree decorated with ornaments for all the states and territories, and is also adorned with large gold and blue bows.

At the unveiling of the Christmas Decorations , Melania was greeted by ballerinas performing in the newly decorated White House. Afterwards she met children from Joint Base Andrews for Christmas crafts.
