It is always a sign of democracy when young people are allowed to speak their minds. Colin Kaepernick, the former 49-er quarterback, made his mark when he protested against unnecessary police violence.
Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback who launched a protest
The quarterback started his protest when he refused to stand up during the USA anthem. He kneeled the first time at the start of the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on the 26th of August. He refuses standing up for the national anthem as long as the nation it represents does nothing against police brutality. In an interview for NFL Media Kaepernick said:
I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.
His protest went on to become a worldwide thing as support came from other NFL players as well as other sports. The protest even reached halfway around the globe with the support of the German soccer team Hertha BSC.
Offensive Player Colin Kaepernick
Colin Kaepernick is a former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and is currently a free agent. During his college years, he was named Offensive Player of the Year twice. He even set the college football record for passing and rushing yards. After his unbelievable college football career, he was drafted by the 49ers in 2011. He helped the team make an appearance in the 2012 Superbowl, the first one after 1994.
Born in Milwaukee, the 30-year-old NFL star grew up in a foster family and started playing football at the age of 8. Kaepernick is a confirmed Lutheran and has often mentioned the importance of faith in his life. According to the Daily Sparks Tribune, he said:
My faith is the basis from where my game comes from.
ACLU Bill of Rights Dinner
Colin Kaepernick has received Eason Monroe Courageous Advocate Award at the recently held ACLU Bill of Rights Dinner. This award came as a bit of a shock for the people attending but in the end, Kaepernick received only support and praises. While accepting the award Kaepernick said:
We all have an obligation no matter the risk, and regardless of reward, to stand up for our fellow men and women who are being oppressed with the understanding that human rights cannot be compromised.
The dust is settling down on the Colin Kaepernick protest, but the aftermath is not clear. Kaepernick lost his job but got worldwide recognition. The fight for people's rights and freedom of speech in the USA will have to continue nevertheless.
