Kathy Bates, 69, is a famous American actress, whom we all know due to her roles in Titanic, Midnight in Paris, Fried Green Tomatoes, American Horror Story, and many more. It’s hard to see her without a smile on her face, but not many know what is hiding behind it.
Kathleen Doyle Bates
Kathy Bates was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1948. Her career has started on stage where she got her first nomination for the Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a play Night, Mother.
The stage success propelled her to major roles, such as Molly Brown in Titanic and Annie Wilkes in Misery, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.
Kathy was nominated for the Emmy Award 14 times thanks to her incredible work on television. The most recent victory she got was for her appearance in the third season of a very popular horror-thriller series American Horror Story.
On September 20, 2016, the actress got her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
All of her amazing nominations and wins got darkened by the battle with cancer, which she had to go through twice in her life –in 2003, she survived ovarian cancer, and in 2012, she overcame stage II breast cancer.
Bates had a double mastectomy and suffers from a condition called lymphedema that causes the swelling of arms and legs, which can happen after undergoing a cancer surgery.
The actress mentioned that her mother had had a radical mastectomy too, after which her arms swelled so much she couldn’t fit into her clothes. It left a horrifying mark on Kathy, and getting through the same thing made her feel frightened.
I remember getting hysterical when, even in the hospital, I noticed strange pains in my hands and then discovered that my arms were swelling.
Lymphedema can’t be cured, but Bates tries to keep it under control by having physical therapy, keeping her weight in check, eating less salty food, and staying away from alcohol.
Smiling in the face of cancer
Despite her struggles, Kathy Bates still continues to wow us with her incredible performances and never-ending sense of humor.
She makes appearances on TV programs making people laugh.
Kathy jokes that she lost weight because she was called obese by the National Enquirer.
Having a good sense of humor and trying to stay positive helped the actress get through the hard times, and we can't help but admire her for that.
