Roseanne Barr Opens Up About Her Sad Experience Of Being ‘Abused Wife’

Roseanne Barr’s real family life is no less interesting and twisted as the one of her on-screen character, Roseanne Conner, from the world-favorite sitcom. Barr knows firsthand what it means to be abused wife and live with a person whom you are afraid of.

Roseanne Barr has an outstanding career on television; however, her personal life was not so rainbow and successful for many years. Barr was married three times, but none of her relationships left such bitter memories as her second marriage with a comedian Tom Arnold.

Roseanne and Tom met soon afterward she filed for divorce from her first husband, Bill Pentland, whom she was married to for 16 years. The actress said at that point of her life, Tom seemed to be her biggest supporter and trusted partner, but after a while, everything changed.

Abused wife

After four years of marriage, Barr announced their split with Arnold. Her life turned upside down in one moment. Her divorce petition cites "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split. Later, Roseanne star confessed that her husband constantly abused her – physically and verbally.

I now realize that I have been a classic battered and abused wife. Throughout our marriage, the respondent hit me, struck me, has thrown objects at me, pinched me and verbally abused me.

In his statement, Arnold denied physically attacking his wife:

I love her and would like to reconcile, but these allegations are very severe. I told her how devastating this all is. I don't know what's going to happen, but I know I would like to talk with her in a healthy environment with our therapist.

Tom explained they both were obsessed with their work and multiple projects, and simply had no time just to sit and talk to each other. But he added he really missed the time they used to spend together.

It's been a tough year for both of us. We've both worked very hard. I've produced three shows and filmed a movie, and she's done 'Roseanne' and wrote a book. We haven't been together like the good old days. My problem is that I took on too many projects and didn't spend enough time on the marriage.


Arnold and Barr were executive producers of ABC's Roseanne. They also had several projects in the works under their Wapello County production company. After their split, Barr fired her husband from his position at the top-rated series and placed a security guard outside the office to keep him out.


Later, Roseanne confessed that her failed marriage had a devastating influence on her at that time, but her sad experience helped her love and appreciate herself in a new way.
