Independence gives strength.

Jessie Gallan was only 13 years old when she left her home and had to earn money for her to make a living. She started working as a milkmaid. Ever since she has been independent. Jessie said that such independence gave her an opportunity to live such a long life.

I always worked hard and seldom would I ever take a holiday. I left home when I was 13 and began a job milking cows. I always had good jobs with very nice people. It's amazing to see how completely different the world is now from the one I grew up in.

Porridge, exercises and no men!

Miss Gallan has never been married, and to be precise, she has been hiding from men this whole time. She explained why she has been staying away from men:

My secret to a long life has been staying away from men. They're just more trouble than they're worth.

The modest centenarian also made it clear that a healthy diet and regular exercises are absolutely vital if you want to live long. She definitely had her priorities straight!

I also made sure that I got plenty of exercise, eat a nice warm bowl of porridge every morning and have never gotten married.

She had energy until the end.

It is unbelievable, but Jessie Gallan attended a weekly exercise club at the Crosby House care home in Aberdeen, where she lived the last years. The woman also enjoyed her church on Sundays.
