Tough childhood

Shawn Corey Carter, mostly known as Jay-Z, was born on December 4, 1969. Like many other kids who lived in Brooklyn, his life could not be called “easy.” The streets were full of violence and drugs. Furthermore, his father left the family when Shawn was little, so his mother, Gloria Carter, raised him and his three siblings on her own. Jay-Z found his passion when his mother bought him a boombox. It was that moment when he knew – it’s music.

Gloria always thought Shawn was a gifted child. He was the last of her four children and didn’t cause that much pain during the labor. She then saw his talent in music and knew for sure that he would become a huge star one day. Meanwhile, Gloria worked as a clerk and tried to keep head above water. She protected her children in any possible way, as she wanted to be the best mom.

Mother's coming out

Recently, Jay-Z discovered his mother’s secret that she has been keeping her whole life to protect not only herself but also her children. Shawn finally heard from her that she loves women. The rapper told in the interview with David Letterman that he was crying because of how happy he was for his mother:

I really cried. I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free.

Shawn knew about his mother's sexual identity, but it was first time they had a conversation about it.

The song

Jay-Z also added that he wrote a song the next day and called it "Smile." In this track, the son tells:

Mama had four kids, but she's a lesbian. Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian.

The rapper continues with:

Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate. Society shame and the pain was too much to take. Cried tears of joy when you fell in love. Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her.
