Gillian Anderson has played the role of Agent Scully on the hit TV series The X-Files from the first season in 1993 till date. Sadly, she recently made it public that she will be leaving the show.

In October 2017, she had suggested that she would be leaving the show after Season 11, but a statement from Fox spoke otherwise. According to them, Gillian “has not commented on returning as it’s premature in that she is currently filming the new event series.”

The X-Files followed adventures of FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). Mulder is a highly renowned profiler with leanings towards the supernatural. His instincts continually drive him to discover connections in cases to alien interventions in human life.

Agent Scully is almost a total opposite. She is a medical doctor and a firm believer in known human laws. She is overtly skeptic and detaches herself from Mulder and his concerns with the supernatural. For her, logic is a key to explaining the mysteries they encounter during investigations.

The duo has a rocky relationship at the start but gradually learn to work together. Agent Scully begins to entertain the possibility that Mulder and his disposition to the supernatural and aliens may not be far-fetched. Along the way, love blossoms, and this helps them even more.

Over the years, The X-Files has become a fan favorite and even accrued cult status. The subject of government conspiracy and cover-ups provided ample material for television in the 90s, and much of it was the inspiration for Chris Carter, creator of the show.

In a recent interview, he shared his thoughts on Gillian not returning to the show at the end of the 11th season.

For me, the show has always been Mulder and Scully. So the idea of doing the show without her isn’t something I’ve ever had to consider.

The best of Scully

Scully has been the most stable and memorable character of The X-Files since it’s inception. And this showreel celebrates her outstanding performances.

And of course, there's always some Mulder to go round.

Fans worldwide are expecting a climatic ending to Season 11 as Agent Scully bows out. The show has been on TV for over 25 years, including several breaks. It is unlikely that Gillian will return to the show, so there is not much to tell if there is another break looming, or if this is the end of The X-Files as we know it.
