After 11 years spent playing the role of Dr. Derek Shepherd known as "McDreamy", on the hit TV show Grey's Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey finally decided it was time to move on.
Fans of his character were heartbroken, but, as the actor put it:
It had been long enough. It was time for me to move on with other things and other interests. I probably should have moved on a couple of years earlier. I stayed a bit longer than I should have.
It's hard to argue with his reasoning and more so, with those dreamy eyes that are one of the reasons many watched Grey's Anatomy.
'Grey's Anatomy' Success
It's hard to believe anyone has not heard about the TV show Grey's Anatomy. It has been one of the greatest shows of the past decade, garnering high viewership and ratings since its debut. And it's not hard to see why.
Grey's Anatomy focused on the personal lives of a group of doctors at the fictional Seattle Grace Memorial Hospital, following their personal struggles with relationships, sexuality, and love.
The show's executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, has said:
There's something fascinating about the medical world - you see things you'd never imagine, like the fact that doctors talk about their boyfriends or their day while they're cutting somebody open.
And that single shift is one of the big reasons for the success of the show.
Dr. Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey, was the head of Neurosurgery at the fictional Seattle Grace Memorial Hospital, and love interest to the series' protagonist, Dr. Meredith Grey.
Described by Rhimes as a typical Prince Charming, Shepherd was intended to be a doctor who doesn't care about anything, devilishly handsome, and the type of guy girls fall in love with.
And indeed he was, until his rather abrupt death resulting from a car crash in the show's eleventh season.
Life After TV Show
The role of Dr. Derek Shepherd had taken its toll on the real life of the actor, Patrick Dempsey, with long hours and commitments affecting his marriage and family life.
His wife, Jillian, filed for divorce in January 2015; however, after the actor had left Grey's Anatomy, the two reconciled later in the year.
In 2016, Dempsey featured in the romantic comedy Bridget Jones' Baby, and today, Patrick is focused on variety of roles, producing, and on his work with the Dempsey Center, founded in honor of his late mother, which provides care for individuals and families impacted by cancer.
Dempsey is also reported to be spending a lot of his time with his family - wife, Jillian, and their three kids - Talula, 15, and twin sons, Sullivan and Darby (both 9).
