Money, Kidnapping, And Drugs: How Balthazar Getty Got Over His Family's Chilling History

Date March 27, 2018

The Getty family will be forever remembered not for their enormous fortune and successful oil company, but for the notorious kidnapping of John Paul Getty III. Paul was abducted in 1973, with the requested ransom of $17 million. His grandfather J. Paul Getty refused to pay the kidnappers, so the teenager's parents had to raise the money on their own.

Paul went free 5 months after his kidnapping. The event haunted him and led him to overdose on drugs in 1981, after which he became quadriplegic. John Paul Getty III died in 2011 at the age of 54. He, however, managed to start the family earlier in his life. Paul got married a year after the kidnapping and had a son Balthazar in 1975.

Living with the family baggage

Most might consider being born into a billionaire family to be a blessing; however, it was different for Balthazar Getty. Despite the infamy of his relatives, Balthazar didn't grow up as wealthy as people think. He got access to the family money much later in life, but before that, he compensated for that with rebellious behavior.

Balthazar fell victim to his family history and had his own issues with substance abuse. “It’s no secret that my father and grandfather had major drug addiction problems, and addiction runs rampant in many families,” he said. He was able to take his life under control and married a fashion designer Rosetta Millington in 2000. The couple has four children.

The Getty family heir had his blood play a part in his life once again in 2008. Balthazar had an affair with actress Sienna Miller, which was largely discussed in the press. He temporarily separated from his wife, but returned to her a few years later.

Balthazar Getty has been making a name for himself as an actor. He's mostly known for his roles in television shows Alias, Brothers & Sisters and Twin Peaks.

Although his family had several issues in the past, Balthazar said that he embraced what it means to be a Getty and is now proud of his heritage. The Getty family is now very close and even gets together for an annual European vacation, according to Balthazar.

Family's reaction to the movie about them

Last year, the audiences around the world were presented with the film All the Money in the World (2017). The movie is based on the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III. J. Paul Getty was portrayed by the legendary veteran actor Christopher Plummer, which brought softness to the real-life person.

The only member of the family that has seen the movie is Balthazar's mother, Gail Harris, who enjoyed the picture. Balthazar himself said he won't watch the film, and the entire family agreed not to discuss it.

Aside from the Hollywood movie, the studios decided to continue the fascinating subject that is the Getty family, and ordered the 10-episode show Trust. Donald Sutherland will play J. Paul Getty. The first episode premiered on March 25th.
