Solid Friendship Between Oprah Winfrey And Gayle King That Lasts For Over Four Decades

Celebs

The friendship between Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King lasts longer than most Hollywood marriages. Through the good and bad times, ups and downs, this pair has stayed together. Yes, there have been threats and scandals, but somehow, they triumphed over them all. They are the ultimate #squadgoals, and anyone looking to maintain a strong friendship can stand to learn a thing or two from them.

The beginning

Oprah and Gayle met back in 1976 when they were both working at a Baltimore TV station. They knew each other for a while but did not officially bond until a snowstorm brought them together.

The then 22-year-old Oprah invited Gayle, who was a production assistant at the time, to stay in her home during a snowstorm.

In an interview with Huffington Post in 2015, Gayle said that Oprah was the perfect host.

When I said I didn't have any clothes with me, she said 'you can wear mine,' and when I said I didn't have any underwear she said, 'you can borrow mine, it's clean.

According to Gayle, they became friends that first night because it became clear that they were both alike.

Weathering the storm together

The duo's friendship only continued to grow stronger as the years went by. King worked on building her TV news career, while Oprah launched her massive empire. But despite how busy they both were, they made sure to carve out time for each other. They once revealed that they talked up to four times a day.

Of course, because of how prominent they were, especially with how uber-famous Oprah became, it made sense that there would be a drama surrounding the pair. One of the most popular ones was the rumors that the ladies were not just friends but actually lovers. No matter how often they denied it, the conspiracy theory remained persistent.

Gayle told Access Hollywood in 2009, "if we were gay, we would tell you." Oprah, on her own part, said she kind of understood why people would want to label them as such. According to her, when two women have a friendship as she and Gayle have and share a deep bond, it's hard for people to figure out mainly because it's so rare.

How else can you explain a level of intimacy where someone always loves you, always respects you, admires you?

Does one feel insecure when the other achieve success?

With most friendships, there is always that little hint of competition, and insecurity may rear its ugly head when one person feels like he/she is not as successful as the other. So, is this something the two ladies struggle with?

Well, according to Gayle, this is not a problem. She told New York Times in 1998 that she was confident in what she brought to the table and was secure enough with herself that her friend's success never bothered her. She said she never felt like she was in her shadow mainly because she was successful in her own right. After winning three Emmys, we can definitely see her point.

Relationship and divorces

Despite being very close friends, the two women developed romantic relationships outside of their friendship. Oprah has been involved with Graham Stedman for more than 30 years, and one of the many reasons they are together is because he understood that Gayle and his lady were a package deal. Barbara Winfrey, Oprah's stepmom, told Dailymail in 2014, "I don't know any man I've ever dated who could tolerate that, but Stedman knows Gayle's going nowhere."

Gayle and her husband, Bill Bumpus, got divorced in 1993 after being married for 11 years. Even though Oprah suspected right from the beginning that the marriage would not last, she never let on. In fact, it was not until 25 years after the marriage ended that the media mogul mentioned her suspicion.

Friends forever

As best friends, Oprah and Gayle have been through it all, and we have no reason to believe that this bond will be breaking anytime soon. In 2012, Oprah said on CBS This Morning:

There is not a better human being in the world as far as I'm concerned...In all of our years of friendship, she has always been happier for me about anything that occurred in my life...Never a hint of jealousy, always wanting what's best for me, and that's what everybody needs in any kind of relationship.

To say, we are slightly jealous of this beautiful friendship. This pair seems to have something most people search for all their lives, and we think that being able to hold on to each other through it all is very impressive.
