Alan Rickman is equally known and appreciated for his roles on the stage as he is on the big screen. Not only did Rickman train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, but he was also a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. For his role as Vicomte de Valmont in the stage production of Les Liaisons Dangereuseshe was even nominated for a Tony Award in 1985.

His worldwide breakthrough came with Die Hard and his fame with Harry Potter. However, one of his greatest on-screen recognitions came in 1991. It was the year Rickman won a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Rickman, without a doubt, remains one of the greatest artists in British history.

The most memorable characters

One of his first big roles and perhaps his best portrayal of a Hollywood villain. Of course, the German evil mastermind Hans Gruber from the cult Bruce Willis movie Die Hard.

Surely, who could think of a better Sheriff of Nottingham? Alan in his prized role in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, opposite Kevin Costner.

Showing his versatility in the Jane Austin drama adaptation Sense and Sensibility as Colonel Brandon.

Another unforgettable role in the hilarious American comedy as Alexander Dane or Dr. Lazarus.

If you haven't watched Alan Rickman as a lead role in Truly, Madly, Deeply, you should definitely take the time and enjoy one of his best roles.

Even though it is quite difficult to envision Rickman playing in a romantic comedy film, the result is simply splendid. Love Actually has several main characters but it would be nothing without the handsome British actor.

We saved the best for last. It is the movie series which led many through their childhood and those that are a bit older were happy to return to it. Of course, we are talking about The Harry Potter series and the one and only Severus Snape.

Alan Rickman will live forever.

No man can be forgotten if his deeds are still remembered. Millions of fans across the globe are still very much happy to remember this acting legend. And even though we all wish that he gave us a few more movies, it is safe to say that the ones he did make are among the best ever made.
